Why?
Why is it important to better understand political settlements? Better understanding of the formal and informal ways in which elite actors exercise power can help both those within a country and external actors, to intervene more effectively to support a stable and inclusive political settlement.
Where a society in conflict is attempting to fundamentally revise or even create a new political settlement, it is important to understand how to ensure that deals between elites to end conflict and deliver public goods are implemented, but also that the tapestry of power is itself transformed to be more inclusive of the population more broadly.
