SUMMARY:PSRP Researcher Presenting: Transitional Justice in Burundi: Practitioners’ Everyday Battles
DESCRIPTION:PSRP Researcher Astrid Jamar will deliver a LLM Insight Seminar at the University of Edinburgh on transitional justice in Burundi. \nThe presentation will address the frictions between texts\, implementation tools and practitioners’ experiences looking at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Burundi. It will unpack the role of transitional justice practitioners as ‘brokers and translators’ of the dissemination of the global transitional justice discourse. For more than a decade\, numerous actors (western donors\, the United Nations\, local and international NGOs and Burundian institutions) engaged in negotiation on the TRC law while pretending to respect international standards and local needs in terms of transitional justice. While the debate has been presented in technocratic terms in the public sphere\, Astrid’s presentation highlights the messy politics framing the process. From the descriptions of these micro-political battles\, it will define transitional justice as a battlefield in which TJ practitioners argue about the past; a battlefield created by the frictions between the universal TJ discourse\, the resulting technocratic aid practices\, and the often silenced\, but highly politicised negotiations and implementation on the ground. \nThe Insight Seminar Series is open to students reading for the LLM Human Rights at Edinburgh Law School. \nPhoto credit: Astrid Jamar \n
