SUMMARY:PSRP Summer School: Inclusive Political Settlements\, Edinburgh 2016
DESCRIPTION:‘Inclusive Political Settlements: the Theory and Practice of Transforming Conflict’\, 20-22 June 2016\, University of Edinburgh \nFollowing the success of the Global Justice Academy’s Inaugural Summer School on Political Violence\, ‘Inclusive Political Settlements: the Theory and Practice of Transforming Conflict’ will be hosted by the GJA’s Political Settlements Research Programme in conjunction with the School of Law and the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. \nThe DFID-funded Political Settlement Research Programme examines how political settlements come into being\, how open and inclusive they are\, and how internal and external actors shape them. For the 2016 Summer School\, we are working to ensure that the participation in the seminar is mixed between scholars and practitioners – and of course those who are both. \nThe interdisciplinary programme will bring together people and perspectives from Law\, Peace Studies\, Political Science\, and Development Studies\, from both an academic and practice background. It will involve intense scholarly discussions as well as a range of social activities. \nParticipants will be encouraged to network with each other in a friendly and academically challenging environment in the scenic\, vibrant setting of the city of Edinburgh.  We want to bridge research and practice\, and are looking for applications from MA and PhD students as well as from practitioners working on peace- and state-building. \nProgramme\n \nThe Summer School will be organised as a three day event. \nThe programme will feature morning lectures by a distinguished panel of international experts in the field of political settlements\, peace- and state-building and peace processes\, and ‘measurement and evaluation’. There will be opportunity to discuss these contributions\, before participants present their own work (academic or practice dilemmas) in the afternoon sessions. This will receive critical feedback from the Summer School Faculty and other participants. \nDay one will discuss concepts and approaches to the post-conflict political settlement. \nDay two will focus on inclusivity\, with particular emphasis on the role of norms and gender. \nDay three will deal with the issues of evaluation and measurement of the transformation of political settlements. \nTo facilitate a lively and enriching discussion\, all participants are expected to share their written papers a week before the start of the Summer School. A detailed programme of all the sessions and speakers will be published in early 2016. \nSpeakers \nProf Christine Bell (University of Edinburgh) \nDr Veronique Dudouet (Berghof Foundation\, Berlin) \nColleen Duggan (International Development Research Centre) \nProf Samuel Hickey (University of Manchester) \nProf Roger Mac Ginty (University of Manchester) \nDr Zoe Marks (University of Edinburgh) \nProf Fionnuala Ni Aolain (University of Ulster) \nDr Catherine O’Rourke (University of Ulster) \nFurther information and contacts \nThe Summer School is organised by the Political Settlements Research Programme of the Global Justice Academy at the University of Edinburgh. For further information\, please contact Jan Pospisil (jan.pospisil@ed.ac.uk) or Astrid Jamar (astrid.jamar@ed.ac.uk) \n
