SUMMARY:PSRP at the Contemporary Burundian Studies Symposium
DESCRIPTION:PSRP member Astrid Jamar will present a paper at the Contemporary Burundian Studies Symposium in Ghent\, on the 16th of October. The paper is entitled ‘Representation battlefield in Transitional Justice: The Social Lives of Policy Reports.’ The paper describes the social processes taking place through the routines of research production and dissemination in relation to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission negotiations in Burundi. It highlights the political negotiations and social dynamics behind report production that constitute the social life of reports. Overall\, the paper illustrates how these social processes constitute battles of representation\, i.e. conflicts “about what the conflict is about.” It encourages to look at policy reports as instruments used by authoring organisations to influence the policy framework of transitional mechanisms towards their goals – rather than technical output. \nThe presentation is part of the panel on ‘The Rule of Law’ chaired by  Prof. Stef Vandeginste: \nJulien Moriceau: Legal aid and rule of law effectiveness in fragile states: lessons from  a large-scale legal assistance : programme for pre-trial detainees in Burundi \nSarah Dezalay: Stay the hand of justice in post-conflict Burundi: Lawyers between lawfare and  extraversion \nSidney Leclerq: Because they can : Dynamics of authoritarianism through democratization processes in Burundi \nAstrid Jamar: Representation battlefield in Transitional Justice \nMurhula Batumike: La Problématique de la légitimité des institutions électorales en situation post-conflit: le cas Burundi \n
