SUMMARY:PSRP Round-table: Peace and Justice: Measuring Success?
DESCRIPTION:The Political Settlements Research Programme has organised a round-table as part of the British International Studies Association (BISA) 41st International Conference 2016\, on 15th June in Edinburgh. The round-table ‘Peace and Justice: Measuring Success?’  will feature contributions from: \n\nChristine Bell\, University of Edinburgh\nTobias Kelly\, University of Edinburgh\nJonathan Joseph\, University of Sheffield\nNadine Ansorg\, University of Kent\n\nThe panel is convened and chaired by Jan Pospisil\, University of Edinburgh. \n  \nPeace and Justice: Measuring Success? \nThe recent endorsement of the Sustainable Development Goals has brought the uneasy relationship between elements of global justice and their objective measurement to the forefront once again. This problematique is also relevant in other processes of institutionalisation cross-cutting international\, national and local levels\, like peace agreements or constitutions. While international organisations or donor agencies are attracted by the provision of what they perceive as ‘hard evidence’\, academic research in general takes a more careful approach. However\, while the idea of measuring complex social processes is a contested one\, it is an accepted part of methodology also for many critical scholars dealing with questions of peace\, security and justice on the international level.\nAgainst this background\, the roundtable will gather scholars currently working on the issue of measurement in the wider context of global justice. It will critically assess this approach\, its opportunities\, weaknesses and principal problems\, particularly in the given contradiction between the demands of funding agencies and wider public interest for easily accessible\, hard data on the one hand\, and the current ‘local’ or ‘complexity’ turn in International Relations and peacebuilding on the other. \n  \nAttendance is by registration and BISA membership only. \n
