SUMMARY:Myths and Realities: What is the Women\, Peace and Security Agenda?
DESCRIPTION:The distinguished international lawyer and human rights advocate Madeleine Rees\, Secretary General of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom\, will deliver the second Chrystal Macmillan Lecture of 2015 at the School of Social and Political Science (SPS)\, on the 26th November 2015. \nIn the lecture\, Secretary General Madeleine Rees will reflect upon the progress made and set out the challenges still to be overcome to secure a peaceful and just world for women and men. During Madeleine’s visit to Edinburgh\, SPS will host a series of events around the themes of her career: human rights\, women\, peace and security. \nAs a programme with a Gender research theme focused on the inclusion of women in political settlements\, we welcome Secretary General Madeleine Rees to the University of Edinburgh\, and look forward to her reflections. \nMyths and Realities: What is the Women\, Peace and Security Agenda?\nIn 2000 the Security Council adopted Resolution 1325 and somewhat slowly and painstakingly the Women Peace and Security Agenda\, was born. What is it? Does it work? This lecture will seek explain not just what the so called agenda is and why it is so important\, but will also address the major fault lines and why implementation has been so difficult. \nI seek to explain and deconstruct some of the terminology that has been implicated in the WPS\, briefly looking at some of the concepts in the resolution: participation\, protection and prevention\, then some of the influential factors: “gender equality” \, political economy\, neo-liberalism\, militarism and masculinities\, and then see how they have played out in real life conflicts\, from Syria to Ukraine and Bosnia. \nThe conclusion will then suggest possible ways in which the myth of transformation that was the promise of the resolutions\, could be made into reality. \nTickets for the event are available via Eventbrite \n
